Yesterday,the Combined Harare Residents Association conducted an Information Integrity Talk at Batanai Gardens.The meeting aimed to promote access to accurate and correct information for the purposes of strengthening accountable public service provision and democratic local governance.
At the meeting, to the Mayor of Harare Councilor Jacob Mafume explained the City of Harare has been putting up mechanisms to promote access to information to enhance transparency in council operations.
"We hold council meeting live, and council minutes are open to the public, however there's need to ensure that such information is available on the City's website and online platforms",said Mayor Mafume.
Mr Precious Shumba the Director of HRT blasted government for lack of clarity on devolution implementation. "They claim that that they are implementing devolution while the are deconcentrating power, that is misinformation, said Shumba. In addition
Topical issues of service delivery, decisions made by the local authority, expenditures, and projects conducted by the local authority were discussed and clarified.
During the meeting residents highlighted the implications of information disorders on service delivery and local governance decision-making processes.
The meeting was graced by His Worship the Mayor, Councilor Jacob Mafume, Perfect Dhlogwane(Media Expert) and Mr Precious Shumba (Local Governance Expert).
The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) is a residents led and residents owned association of Harare founded in 1998 as an umbrella body of local, then small and less organized residents associations in Harare. In 1999, CHRA registered as a trust and over the years has grown to become the leading voice of Harare residents on political, social and economic issues. CHRA has two affiliate ward based residents associations and over 100 corporate members. With thirty-six ward structures that mirror the City of Harare`s administrative wards, the core mandate of the association is to represent and support all residents of Harare.
